Farragut's Early Life
George Farragut, David Farragut's father, was an American naval officer who had fought in the Revolutionary war. He earned naval officer David Porter's favor by saving his father's life.
Farragut was born on July 5th, 1801 at Stony Point, Tennessee. Stony point was a ferry crossing near Knoxville, where Farragut saw a boat for the first time.
Farragut had a far from happy childhood. Farragut's mother died when he was only 9. His father couldn't take care of him and the other Farragut children by himself. He decided to let David Porter adopt Farragut.
