Postwar
Mobile Bay was Farragut's last battle. He was 63 years old, and exhausted by the stress of battle. In 1866, he became an Admiral, the highest rank of his career and the first Admiral rank ever bestowed upon a U.S. naval officer. Farragut was honored across the United States and also in Europe with a tour of its countries in a special squadron. He was recognized in England, France, and Russia. After Lincoln was assassinated, Farragut might have successfully run for president after Andrew Johnson, but he was too tired to enter politics. Ulysses S. Grant became the new president in 1869. Farragut died one year later, at the age of 70. Today, in Washington, D.C., a statue of David Farragut stands in Farragut square.
